The 8-Foot Fire Door Testing Gap: Quick Reference

By Waterson Corporation • 2026-04-03 • 5-minute read
ANSI/BHMA A156.17 tests self-closing hinges on a 3'x7' door. NFPA 80 Table 6.4.3.1 stops at 3'x7'. Modern commercial buildings routinely use 8-foot fire doors. There is no standardized test for the gap — only a legal path through manufacturer's published listings.

The Gap, Explained in 90 Seconds

NFPA 80 Section 6.4.3.1 says hinges shall comply with "individual door and hardware manufacturer's published listings OR Table 6.4.3.1."

Table 6.4.3.1 lists a maximum of 3'0" x 7'0" for spring/self-closing hinges. Nothing above that.

ANSI/BHMA A156.17 (the performance test standard) uses a 3'x7' reference specimen. No test protocol exists for 8-foot doors.

Result: for 8-foot fire doors, the table is empty and the standard has no defined test. The only valid NFPA 80 compliance path is a manufacturer's published listing for the oversized application.

What this means for specs: Specifying "ANSI/BHMA A156.17 Grade 1" does not cover 8-foot fire doors. That certification was earned on a 3'x7' specimen. Your spec must explicitly require the manufacturer to have a published listing for the actual door size in use.

Which Manufacturers Have 8-Foot Listings?

Product Type 8-Foot Listing? UL Fire Rating
Traditional spring hinges (Trudoor, etc.) No — explicitly 3'x7' max Limited
PBB ALREX No public listing found UL 10C (180-min)
Waterson Yes — documented testing on 8-ft specimen, 4 hinges 3-hour UL Listed

Spec Language That Works for 8-Foot Fire Doors

Add to your specification: "Self-closing hinges for [8-foot] fire-rated doors shall be UL Listed, minimum 3-hour fire rating. Manufacturer shall provide published documentation confirming testing on a door specimen of [8'0"] or greater using ANSI/BHMA A156.17 methodology with [four] hinges. Provide UL file number or equivalent third-party verification for the oversized door application. Consult local AHJ prior to installation."

AHJ Acceptance: The Bottom Line

There is no universal pre-approval for 8-foot fire door self-closing hinge listings. AHJ acceptance is project-by-project. Consult the local AHJ early. Bring the manufacturer's published listing, test specimen data, and UL documentation to that conversation.

Lori Greene (iDigHardware/Allegion), January 2023:

"If the manufacturer's published listings allow spring hinges to be installed on fire doors larger than 3'-0" x 7'-0", that is acceptable according to NFPA 80 (check your state and local codes for more restrictive requirements)."
