Can You Get Soft-Close Without Self-Close on a Door With a Magnet Catch?

Three different jobs hide inside the phrase “soft close”

Self-closing means something returns the door to the frame, usually a spring. Speed control, what most people mean by soft-close, means something resists the door’s motion: a friction brake or a hydraulic damper. Latching means something keeps the door shut once it arrives: a latch bolt, or here, a magnet.

A plain spring hinge is force with no brake. An overhead closer is force plus brake in one body, with a minimum force it cannot go below. A Waterson closer hinge keeps force and speed control as two independent settings and leaves latching to the door. Its swing-speed brake works from about 90° down to 20°; the final-approach brake, which Waterson labels “latch speed,” covers the last 30° to 10°. On a magnet-catch door that phase is exactly where the slam lands.

Why a magnet-catch door slams in a breeze

A pressure difference across the doorway, from wind or HVAC, is a closing force. A magnet acts only in the last inch, so a latch-free door arrives at full speed with nothing having resisted it along the way.

Two intuitive fixes make it worse. A stronger magnet changes the last inch and leaves the door accelerating across the other 80°; a plain spring hinge adds its own force on top of the wind. The missing component is a brake, and every Waterson model carries one in the barrel, so the fix is a hinge swap on the existing screw holes.

What a comfortable close looks like

ADA 2010 Section 404.2.8 benchmarks a door closer at 90° to 12° in at least 5 seconds; ICC A117.1-2017 Section 404.2.7.2 gives spring hinges 70° to closed in at least 1.5 seconds. Waterson’s own check: from 90°, the door reaches the frame in about 3 to 5 seconds with a tap rather than a bang.

Damping without closing force: the spring dial at N

Out of the box a Waterson hinge ships with the dial at N, both brakes at a medium setting, and on hydraulic hinges the damping zone near the closed position, Waterson’s stated setting for light doors and doors with no latch. For a simple brake, ask for the A set (three mechanical-brake hinges). Waterson’s field guidance draws one line here: only the hydraulic mechanism delivers anti-slam damping in the last few degrees. So when gusts are the complaint, the B set places one hydraulic hinge between two mechanical ones; Waterson’s technical team describes it as slowing and controlling the door rather than snapping it shut, so with the dial at N it delivers the door gently to the magnet.

One honest caveat from the same team: wind is a challenge for every closing device on the market, so they make no promise of a result. On a door that is genuinely wind-exposed and busy, they ask for two hydraulic hinges per door to share the impact, and add that a mechanical hinge performs more stably on a heavy, high-traffic door; that is a specification-engineer conversation.   1. Leave the dial at N.
  2. With a 5 mm hex key, turn the swing-speed brake toward (−) until the door coasts.
  3. Turn the final-approach brake toward (−) so the last 30° to 10° is slow.
  4. On a B set, keep the hydraulic hinge’s 5 mm zone port fully (+) for damping at about 30° to 0°, then turn the 3 mm buffer port toward (−) about 15° at a time. If the door stops 15–30° short, back off toward (+) until it reaches the magnet.
  5. Tighten a 3 mm lock-in screw on every adjusted hinge. If settings drift after a few days, record each hinge’s settings and contact Waterson support.

Waterson hinges follow ANSI/BHMA A156.7 template dimensions and use the same screws as a standard butt hinge, an industry convention. Three tape readings pick the size and the count.

Thickness (tape across the door edge)

Up to 1-3/8 in (35 mm): K51M-400. 1-7/16 to 1-3/4 in (36–44 mm): K51M-450. Over 1-3/4 in (44.5–63.5 mm): K51M-500 or K51M-500D. Between sizes, size up, and let the specification engineer route the common 1-3/4 in door.

Waterson starts at 4 × 4 in, so a 3-1/2 × 3-1/2 in residential hinge means enlarging the mortise by 1/2 in in both height and width. Note the corner radius and confirm solid backing behind the screws.

The garage-to-house door is the opposite case: here you want the spring

The third voice asked for “soft-closing hinges” on the door to the garage. That door usually needs to close itself: the 2021 International Residential Code, Section R302.5.1, requires the door between an attached garage and the dwelling to be solid wood or solid-/honeycomb-core steel at least 1-3/8 in thick, or a 20-minute fire-rated door, with a self-closing or automatic-closing device. Confirm adoption with the local building department.

Same Waterson hinge, dial turned up. On a fire-labeled door choose the A set or the B set; Waterson’s fire-door listing covers hydraulic hinges only as part of a set with mechanical hinges, which is why the B set pairs its hydraulic hinge with two mechanical ones. The C and D sets carry hold-open and stay off fire doors: NFPA 80 (2025) Section 6.4.1.4 requires the closing mechanism to bring the door to positive latching on every operation. Waterson K51M hinges are UL Listed self-closing hinges certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.17 Grade 1; permitted by NFPA 80 on fire door assemblies rated up to 3 hours. W41 carries no fire certification.

Candidly, some doors send a closer hinge to the bench: pivot and floor-spring doors, doors with heavy acoustic or fire compression gasketing, doors that already carry another closing device, and openings under high wind pressure. Those go to Waterson engineering first.

Does the mechanical A set give anti-slam, or do I need the hydraulic B set?

Per Waterson’s field guidance, only the hydraulic mechanism delivers anti-slam damping. The mechanical A set gives swing-speed and latch-speed control. When a magnet-catch door slams in gusts, ask for the B set: its hydraulic hinge slows and controls the door rather than snapping it shut, so the magnet takes the final hold. On a heavy, high-traffic door the team notes the mechanical hinge performs more stably.
