Yes — as long as something physical defines where “closed” is. A typical request: two half-height doors hung on Waterson multifunction hinges with no frame around them. The hinges close the doors every time, and every time the leaves keep going past center. A closer hinge returns the door; it has no way of knowing where the door should stop.
The fix is an installation detail, not a change of hardware. Here is the three-part answer we give on counter door, frameless glass and post-mounted gate projects: add a closed stop, tune the brakes, and choose a Waterson mount built for a post rather than a frame.
Why a Self-Closing Hinge Swings Past “Closed” When There Is No Frame
Two jobs are usually done by two parts. The closer (a spring inside the hinge barrel) stores energy when you open the door and gives it back on the way shut. The stop (the frame rebate, strike or latch) absorbs the last of that energy at 0°. Remove the frame and the second job is vacant, so the leaf rotates through center and either rebounds — the saloon-door wobble — or rests crooked.
Waterson brakes reduce the overshoot but cannot replace the missing reference. The swing-speed brake works from about 90° down to 20° and the latch-speed brake from 30° down to 10°; the angles are factory-fixed and only the strength is adjustable. Below 10° the door rides on momentum, which on a framed door is exactly what seats the latch.
Fix 1: Give the Door Something to Close Against
The cheapest and most reliable cure is a physical closed stop, and it belongs on the drawing. Ranked from least to most intrusive: a stop strip screwed to the post, a floor stop, a roller or magnetic catch, a rebated strike, and finally a latch. On a pair of half-height doors, one leaf carries an astragal so both share a closed reference. On frameless glass, the K51GWL ±1° adjustment bolt trims the closed angle so the glass edge meets its stop square.
The 90°/120° door-stop accessory fits the top and bottom hinges of the set, factory pre-installed or field-fitted. Its job is limiting the opening side of the swing — Waterson has no backcheck function, and this accessory is the substitute that protects the mechanism. The closed side still needs its own stop.
Fix 2: Tune the Hinge Set So the Door Arrives Slowly
Once a stop exists, set the brakes so the door reaches it gently. Waterson mechanism codes in plain English: DS is a double spring (force only), SA adds a swing-speed brake, SA1 a latch-speed brake, SB a hold-open, and HA/HS hydraulic damping. An all-mechanical A set (SA·SA·SA1) suits an indoor counter door; a B set (DS·HA·SA) adds hydraulic damping for glass and breezy spots. Every Waterson model has speed control — mechanical friction on A/C sets, hydraulic plus mechanical on B/D sets.
- Spring dial (5 mm hex): step from N one click at a time until the door just reaches the stop from 90°.
- A swing brake, then A1 latch brake (5 mm hex): (+) loosens the brake and speeds the door up; (−) tightens it and slows the door — the opposite of what many expect.
- H1 zone (5 mm hex), then H2 strength (3 mm hex), B/D sets only: leave H1 at full (+), the factory default, and add H2 strength gradually.
- Lock in: tighten at least one 3 mm lock-in screw per barrel after every adjustment.

Fix 3: Choose a Mount Built for a Post, Not a Frame
The Waterson K51P family was designed for these openings. K51W is a side-mount L-shape that sits in the middle of a post instead of flat against a wall — the counter-door specialist; K51WP adds a weather cap. K51P is full-surface clamping and leaves a finger gap when closed. For glass, K51GWL mounts to a wall or post at least 38 mm thick, K51GG is glass-to-glass, and K51GM clamps onto an existing metal frame.
A second common question: can the K51W wall-side plate be embedded in a thin wood post? Mid-post mounting is the intended use, but the published guidance gives no plate or leaf thickness figure, so send the drawing, post material and leaf thickness to a specification engineer before routing the pocket.
Soft, unreinforced posts let screws strip and the leaf sag, which falls outside the warranty. On steel posts spot welding is fine; full welding destroys the internal mechanism. Weight capacity and cycle ratings for K51P, K51W and K51G are confirmed per project. Specify 316 stainless for pool, coastal or any site within 50 miles of the coastline, with a weather cap outdoors. None of the gate or glass families carries a fire certification.
The Four Common Cases — and Where Waterson Is Not the Answer
A single-swing counter door takes a K51W or K51P 2-hinge A set with a stop strip on the post. A bank-teller wood gate on an accessible route gets the spring dial set for 5 lbf or less and a floor stop or rebated strike. A frameless glass office door pairs a K51GWL B set with a floor stop. A glass or wood pool gate uses K51GWL or K51P in 316 with cap; self-closing from any angle plus self-latching is the code intent (IRC AG105.2.8), so consult local building code and your AHJ.
Waterson is a mismatch for a true double-acting saloon door, which needs a gravity pivot or double-acting spring hinge that centers on a detent instead of a frame. Doors with heavy AR/FR compression gasketing are also outside the product's scope, and Waterson's guidance rules out pairing its closer hinges with an overhead closer or floor spring on the same leaf.

Do half-height doors and frameless glass doors need fire-rated hinges?
