You can identify the hinge in under a minute from the barrel ports and a swing test. The one condition that matters is whether the barrel carries Waterson's adjustment ports (two 3 mm lock-in screws plus a numbered spring dial, a brake nut or a flat hydraulic face, detailed below). Present: you are holding a Waterson closer hinge, and this guide tells you which one. Absent: another spring hinge has been substituted, and the fix is a like-for-like Waterson replacement.

Two recent calls prompted this guide: a distributor asking what separates an SA from an SA1 after one hinge on a three-hinge door was damaged, and a contractor who found a substituted brand where the schedule called for Waterson. Start Here: Is the Damaged Hinge a Waterson at All?

Which ports appear depends on the code: a DS has a dial at both ends, an HA has a flat face and a brake nut with no dial, an SA has a dial and a brake nut. Every K51 hinge is non-handed and a single barrel can be installed either way up, so a dial at the bottom is normal; the ports identify the hinge. The Six Mechanism Codes, Decoded

The code names the two ends of the barrel: S spring power, H hydraulic damping, A swing-speed brake, A1 latch-speed brake, B hold-open. Every Waterson hinge has speed control; A and C sets get it from mechanical friction, B and D sets add a hydraulic stage.

A mechanical brake gives constant resistance; a hydraulic stage pushes back harder the harder the door is pushed. Which Codes Are in Each Set: Reading the A/B/C/D Diagram

The set letter on your invoice plus the hinge count usually identifies a damaged hinge by elimination before any test. A and C are the all-mechanical "M" sets; B and D are the hydraulic-hybrid "H" sets. Waterson recommends A or B for fire doors, and the hydraulic hinge in a B set is accepted only as part of the complete set, never on its own. C and D carry an SB hold-open, intended for 2- and 3-hinge configurations on non-rated openings.

Elimination works like this. An A3 set has exactly one SA1: if both undamaged hinges slow the door early in the swing, the broken one is the SA1. A B3 set has exactly one hydraulic hinge, so a flat face with a 3 mm socket identifies the HA at a glance; the other two are DS (dial, no brake nut) and SA.

The Swing Test: Telling SA from SA1 When the Mark Is Unreadable

SA and SA1 look alike; the brake band inside differs and is factory-fixed, so behaviour is a reliable fingerprint. If the invoice gives you the code, trust that; otherwise run this 30-second procedure with a 5 mm and a 3 mm hex key.

  1. Record the starting point. Door closed, photograph the brake nut position on the suspect hinge.
  2. Change one thing. Turn that hinge's 5 mm brake nut a small turn toward (−), which tightens the brake. Leave the other hinges alone.
  3. Release from 90°. Slowing through the early and middle swing (roughly 80–90° down to 20°) means SA; slowing only on the final approach (about 30° to 10°) means SA1.
  4. Restore and lock. Return the nut to the photographed position, tighten at least one 3 mm lock-in screw, then retest latching from full open.
Fire doors and accessible routes

NFPA 80 Section 6.4.1.4 requires positive latching on each door operation, so every brake change ends with a latching test from full open. On an accessible route, ADA Section 404.2.8.1 requires at least 5 seconds from 90° open to 12° from the latch; where the AHJ treats the device as a spring hinge, ICC A117.1 Section 404.2.7.2 applies (70° to closed in at least 1.5 seconds). The Substitution Problem: One Unlisted Hinge on a Fire Door

A look-alike spring hinge fits the same ANSI/BHMA A156.7 template, so a mixed set ships and closes fine on day one. NFPA 80 Section 6.4.3 accepts spring-type self-closing hinges through the manufacturer's published listing or Table 6.4.3.1 and requires ANSI/BHMA A156.17 Grade 1 hinges. Waterson K51M and K51L are UL Listed self-closing hinges (certificate GVEV.R26997) tested as complete 3- and 4-hinge sets and permitted by NFPA 80 on assemblies rated up to 3 hours. One foreign hinge means the door no longer carries the tested configuration; the annual inspection under NFPA 80 Section 5.2.1, whose full-open closing check (Section 5.2.3.5.2) is where a mixed set usually reveals itself, is when that surfaces.

Two more rules apply. Two closing devices on one door, whether a second brand's spring hinge or an overhead closer on top of a Waterson set, work against each other and sit on Waterson's exclusion list. Alternatives Considered: When the Answer Is Something Other Than a Hinge

Replacing one damaged Waterson hinge with the correct code keeps the listing, the template holes and the existing settings. Some doors are better served another way: heavy AR/FR compression gasketing, an overhead closer already fitted, or a floor pivot.

How can I tell an SA hinge from an SA1 hinge if the code is unreadable?

Can I replace one damaged Waterson hinge with a spring hinge from another brand?

In what order should I adjust a Waterson closer hinge set?

Waterson's field guidance is tension first, then hold-open, then swing speed, then hydraulic. Start every spring hinge at No. 3 and raise them together until the door closes fully, engage the SB hold-open if the set has one, tighten the 5 mm swing-speed nut, and touch the 3 mm hydraulic port only if the door still closes too fast. If settings seem to drift, record the setting on each hinge and send that record to Waterson support.

What should I send Waterson to get the correct replacement hinge?

Four photos and a few numbers: each barrel top (dial or flat face), the barrel bottom (brake or hold-open nut), the whole door edge with the damaged hinge marked, and the fire label if present. Add door height, width, thickness, approximate weight, material, finish code, leaf size and corner radius, plus the invoice or set code and whether any other closing device is on the door. Many cases resolve with shimming or a tension adjustment rather than a part.
