The short answer: paint yes, field powder coat no, and the one condition that matters
Three different things get called "painting a hinge":
- Rattle-can spray paint, ambient cure. Waterson's position: fine on an assembled hinge, no effect on function.
- Field powder coating, media blast plus an oven cure around 400°F. Waterson's technical team does not recommend it, because function cannot be guaranteed afterwards. This is a guarantee boundary, not a temperature specification.
- Factory-applied finish. For a specific color, Waterson can arrange it at the factory for an additional cost and a longer lead time; a color code or sample photo is needed to quote.
The condition that matters is disassembly. Waterson's guidance is explicit that the hinge stays fully assembled through any spray-paint job, because taking the barrel apart compromises the internal mechanism. That is the whole rule; there is no published masking procedure beyond it.
Architects: put the BHMA finish code on the hardware schedule. Owners and facility managers: a slightly mismatched hinge is far cheaper than a gate that stops closing. Fabricators: hang the hinge after the oven, covered below.
What lives inside a closer hinge barrel, and where Waterson draws the line
A Waterson closer hinge barrel is about 6 in. tall and roughly 1-1/8 in. in diameter, and it is busy inside. Every set carries a dial-adjustable spring (5 mm hex) and speed control: mechanical friction brakes on the A and C sets, and hydraulic damping on the B and D sets, tuned through a 3 mm port plus a 5 mm port that shifts the damping zone. That is the assembly a blast cabinet and an oven would be working on.
Waterson's technical team does not recommend the blast-and-cure process and cannot guarantee function afterwards. No reason beyond that and no temperature rating for the seals or hydraulic fluid has been published, and this article will not invent either. A shop that ran a hinge through the oven once and got a working hinge back has a data point, not a specification.
Gate fabricators already treat the barrel as a sealed assembly for welding: spot welding a K51P or K51PS is fine, while full welding destroys the internal mechanism and spring elements. The coating guidance follows the same principle of keeping aggressive processes off the hinge.

If what you actually want is a color match: BHMA finishes, PVD and the factory route
If the real goal is a matched color, the productive question is which finish to order. Waterson offers four BHMA finish options, two standard and two made to order:

For most gate jobs the practical fix is 631 flat black. Beyond those, the factory can apply custom PVD colors (gold, bronze, custom ranges) with a minimum order quantity. For a one-off color, send the color code or a sample photo; pricing depends on the color and finish, and the schedule question belongs at the submittal stage rather than at installation.
If what you actually want is corrosion resistance: choose the alloy, not a coating
Many "can we powder coat it" questions are really "will it rust on my coastal or pool gate." A coating protects only the surface; a scratch, a fastener hole or wear at the knuckle exposes base metal. The alloy protects the full cross-section.
Waterson's material rule: 304 for interior and non-coastal work; 316 for any project within 50 miles of a coastline, any pool enclosure and every outdoor gate; 316L where salt spray is constant, such as marine and oceanfront sites. Two ordering notes. Specify 316 with the gate order and confirm lead time with Waterson at the submittal stage, and on coastal submittals request the ASTM A967 passivation certificate. Field guidance for gate fabricators: sequencing finish, welding and hardware
The cleanest way to keep a Waterson hinge out of the oven is to sequence the finish ahead of the hardware:
- Fabricate the gate frame and posts.
- Blast and powder coat the frame and posts; let them cure fully.
- Clamp-on K51P and screw-on K51PS go on after the cure. On weld-on designs, weld mounting plates to the bare frame and bolt the hinge on after the cure, or spot weld the K51PS before coating and mask the hinge body (spot welds only; full welding destroys the mechanism).
- Touch up bare fastener heads with spray paint. The hinge never sees the oven.
While the order is open, settle the mechanism too: Waterson's field guidance is that the hydraulic version slows the gate rather than snapping it shut, and the mechanical version has the stronger spring action when reliable latching is the priority.
