In short: A156.17 sets the bar → UL verifies the product meets the bar → NFPA 80 requires the UL verification for fire door use.
Critical implication for fire rating: A self-closing hinge that is UL Listed Grade 1 qualifies, per NFPA 80, for use as the closing device on up to 3-hour fire-rated doors. The "3-hour fire rating" is not a separate UL certification — it comes from NFPA 80's allowance for UL Listed Grade 1 hardware. Both K51M and K51L hold this qualification.
Correct way to say it: "UL Listed Grade 1, which per NFPA 80 qualifies for use on up to 3-hour fire doors"
Incorrect: "UL certified for 3 hours" (UL does not certify a time rating — NFPA 80 establishes the allowable fire door duration)
All K51 series products (K51M, K51L, K51P, K51MP, K51W, K51G) share the same barrel (axle) design. This means:

When an existing space requires upgrading a metal door to a frameless glass door, K51GM is the only solution on the market — no need to remove the old door frame; the door leaf can be replaced with transparent tempered glass simply by connecting with a metal clamp.

The W41K is an interfold hinge, also known as a leaf-style hinge. Its appearance is linear, and its installation method differs from butterfly-style mortise hinges.
Compared to butterfly-style hinges (W41M / K51M etc.) which create a gap offset equal to two leaf thicknesses when surface-mounted without mortising, the W41K interfold design only produces one leaf thickness of offset — significantly reducing the gap problem.

彈簧是關門的動力來源。鉸鏈內部有兩種彈簧,功能不同:
簡單說:扭力彈簧負責「推」,碟形彈簧負責「煞」。
一般彈簧鉸鏈需要用插銷(pin)來調整彈力——插銷要對準孔位、用力插入,操作不便且難以精確控制。
Waterson 的扭力盤設計完全不需要插銷:
競品差異:這個數字轉盤設計是競品幾乎都沒有的。安裝人員一支扳手就能調整,直接看數字就知道設定值。
增加力道(N → 較大數字):
減少力道(較大數字 → 較小數字):
扭力盤內建防呆機制,但如果用過大的力氣直接從 N 猛推到 7,會破壞防呆結構,導致鉸鏈不穩定。
說明書原文:"CAUTION: Do not forcefully turn in the space from N to 7 or 7 to N. That will break the hinge and void the warranty."
想像你把彈簧力道調好,門從 30° 可以平穩地關上、順利上鎖。這時候一切沒問題。
但有人把門推到 90°(全開)呢?彈簧從 90° 釋放的蓄壓遠大於 30°,門扇會猛力甩關——門越重越大,夾傷手指、撞傷行人的風險越高。
煞車就是解決這個問題:

兩段煞車搭配彈簧,讓門無論從什麼角度關閉,都能維持平穩可控的速度。
底部有一個 5mm 六角螺栓,往內鎖緊時:
A 可調整 Swing Speed,A1 可調整 Latch Speed。作動角度是出廠固定的,使用者無法改變——你能調的是煞車力道的「強弱」,不是煞車「在哪個角度作用」。(液壓 H1 的作用區間才是可移動的,見 Section 4。)

為什麼 (+) 是變快? 因為 (+) 方向是鬆開碟形彈簧、減少摩擦力,所以門速變快。(-) 方向是鎖緊碟形彈簧、增加摩擦力,門速變慢。
調整順序(說明書 Step 3):先調 A(Swing Speed),再調 A1(Latch Speed)。
每顆鉸鏈的桶身側邊有兩顆 3mm lock-in screws(固定螺絲,用 3mm 六角扳手操作)。調整完任何煞車設定(A、A1、HA)後,至少鎖緊一顆。如果忘記鎖,每次開關門的震動會讓設定值慢慢跑掉,幾天後門的行為就會改變。
後面提到「鎖緊 lock-in screws」時,都是指這同一組螺絲。
液壓機構只裝在 HA 或 HS 鉸鏈的上端,提供兩個獨立的可調功能。
機械煞車提供固定的阻力——不管門被推多用力,煞車阻力都一樣。液壓則在一定範圍內產生可變的阻力——正常關門時按設定速度平穩關閉,但如果有人用力推門或被風吹,液壓會自動產生額外阻力來抵抗,防止猛關。
這就是為什麼玻璃門或多風環境特別適合液壓機構。

控制液壓阻尼在哪個角度範圍作用。這是液壓獨有的功能——機械煞車的作用角度固定,但液壓的作用區間可以移動。

調整步驟:
啟用順序(說明書 Step 4):先確認 H1(作用區間)是否需要調整,再調 H2(阻尼強度)。
液壓鉸鏈的上端有三層嵌套的六角孔,從外到內:

與頂裝關閉器的差異:頂裝關閉器油量大,漏油會沿門面滴落造成油汙。Waterson 鉸鏈的液壓油匣只有約 2–3 cc,即使洩漏也只是類似潤滑油微量滲出,視覺上幾乎看不出來。
洩漏後的影響:液壓緩衝消失,但因為 Waterson 採用機械 + 液壓混合煞車,機械煞車仍然持續運作,門扇不會失去速度控制。這比純液壓地鉸鏈(floor closer)安全得多。
Hold-Open 讓門扇在 85°±5° 保持開啟,不會自動關閉。
根據 NFPA 80,防火門必須隨時能自動關閉。Waterson 的 Hold-Open 是機械式,不具備遠端自動釋放功能(需要人手動輕推解除)。如果需要火災時自動釋放,必須使用電磁閥式 hold-open 裝置。
實務建議:防火門選 A 或 B 型(不含 Hold-Open),從根本上避免問題。C 或 D 型即使可以 disable Hold-Open,使用者也可能日後自行啟用。
Waterson 鉸鏈沒有內建 back check 功能(門開太快時的阻力)。替代方案是安裝 Door Stop 配件,限制門扇的最大開啟角度:
鉸鏈本身可以開到 180°,但建議日常控制在 90°~120° 以內以延長機構壽命。建議出廠前預先安裝,也可現場安裝。詳見 accessories。

The spring is the power source for closing the door. There are two types of springs inside the hinge with different functions:
In short: Torsion springs are responsible for "pushing," and disk springs are responsible for "braking."
General spring hinges require a pin to adjust the spring tension — the pin needs to align with the holes and be inserted forcefully, which is inconvenient to operate and difficult to control precisely.
Waterson's torque dial design does not require any pins:
Competitor Differences: This numbered dial design is almost non-existent in competing products. Installers can adjust with a single wrench and know the setting directly by looking at the numbers.
Increase Force (N → Larger Number):
Decrease Force (Larger Number → Smaller Number):
The torque dial has a built-in fail-safe mechanism, but if excessive force is used to push directly from N to 7, it will damage the fail-safe structure, leading to hinge instability.
Instruction manual quote: "CAUTION: Do not forcefully turn in the space from N to 7 or 7 to N. That will break the hinge and void the warranty."
Imagine you have adjusted the spring force, and the door can close smoothly from 30° and latch successfully. Everything is fine at this point.
But what if someone pushes the door to 90° (fully open)? The accumulated pressure released by the spring from 90° is much greater than from 30°, and the door will slam shut violently — the heavier and larger the door, the higher the risk of pinching fingers or injuring pedestrians.
The brake solves this problem:

The two-stage brake, combined with the spring, ensures that the door closes at a smooth and controlled speed, regardless of the opening angle.
There is a 5mm hex bolt at the bottom. When tightened inwards:
A adjusts Swing Speed, A1 adjusts Latch Speed. The operating angle is factory set and cannot be changed by the user — you can adjust the "strength" of the brake force, not "at what angle" the brake acts. (The operating range of hydraulic H1 is movable, see Section 4.)

Why does (+) mean faster? Because the (+) direction loosens the disk springs, reducing friction, so the door speed increases. The (-) direction tightens the disk springs, increasing friction, so the door speed decreases.
Adjustment Order (Manual Step 3): First adjust A (Swing Speed), then adjust A1 (Latch Speed).
Each hinge barrel has two 3mm lock-in screws (operated with a 3mm hex key) on the side. After adjusting any brake setting (A, A1, HA), tighten at least one. If you forget to tighten, the vibrations from opening and closing the door will gradually alter the settings, and the door's behavior will change after a few days.
When "tighten lock-in screws" is mentioned later, it refers to this same set of screws.
The hydraulic mechanism is only installed at the upper end of HA or HS hinges, providing two independent adjustable functions.
Mechanical brakes provide fixed resistance — no matter how much force the door is pushed with, the braking resistance remains the same. Hydraulics, however, generate variable resistance within a certain range — during normal closing, it closes smoothly at the set speed, but if someone forcefully pushes the door or it's caught by wind, the hydraulics will automatically generate additional resistance to counteract it, preventing violent closing.
This is why glass doors or windy environments are particularly suitable for hydraulic mechanisms.

Controls at what angular range the hydraulic damping acts. This is a unique feature of hydraulics — mechanical brake operating angles are fixed, but the hydraulic operating range can be moved.

The upper end of the hydraulic hinge has three nested hex holes, from outside to inside:

Difference from overhead closers: Overhead closers have a large oil volume, and oil leaks can drip down the door, causing stains. Waterson hinge hydraulic cylinders contain only about 2–3 cc of hydraulic fluid; even if there is a leak, it would be similar to a slight seepage of lubricant, almost visually imperceptible.
Impact of leakage: Hydraulic buffering disappears, but because Waterson uses a mechanical + hydraulic hybrid brake, the mechanical brake continues to operate, and the door does not lose speed control. This is much safer than pure hydraulic floor closers.
Hold-Open keeps the door open at 85°±5°, preventing it from closing automatically.
According to NFPA 80, fire doors must be able to close automatically at all times. Waterson's Hold-Open is mechanical and does not have a remote automatic release function (requires manual gentle push to release). If automatic release is required in case of fire, an electromagnetic hold-open device must be used.
Practical Advice: For fire doors, choose A or B type (without Hold-Open) to fundamentally avoid problems. Even if C or D types can disable Hold-Open, users may enable it themselves later.
Waterson hinges do not have a built-in back check function (resistance when the door opens too fast). An alternative is to install a Door Stop accessory to limit the maximum opening angle of the door:
The hinge itself can open up to 180°, but it is recommended to keep daily operation within 90°~120° to extend the life of the mechanism. It is recommended to pre-install before leaving the factory, or it can be installed on-site. See accessories for details.
When installers receive new hinges, the default state of each mechanism is:

When 4 or 5 hinges are installed, the total spring force is already very strong. The hold-open mechanism of Type C/D relies on the brake to "hold" the door at a specific angle, but the rebound force of 4-5 springs exceeds the braking capacity, making the hold-open function inoperable. Therefore, only Type A and B are provided for 4 or more hinges.

Using any single uncertified hardware on a fire door will invalidate the fire rating of the entire door assembly.

常見誤解:許多業者混用這兩個數字。5 秒是 door closer 的標準,1.5 秒是 spring hinge 的標準——設備類型不同、測量起點不同、最低時間不同。
Waterson closer hinge 同時具備機械煞車和液壓緩速兩種減速機構:
兩種機構搭配使用,能夠達到最嚴苛的 5 秒關門速度要求。詳見 closing-mechanism。
即便防火門豁免 5 磅限制,開啟力道仍應以能確保門關閉和上鎖的最小必要力道為原則。
Waterson closer hinge 將開門力和關門力分離(decouple)。液壓機構獨立於抵抗開門的彈簧提供關門動力,兩者可分別調整。K51 系列經 Intertek 獨立測試(Test #IT-ADA-901),驗證符合 5 lbs 開門力同時可靠上鎖。
防火門豁免 ADA 的 5 磅限制,但這不代表「可以任意重」。正確的理解是:

兩扇連續門之間距離至少 48"(1220 mm),加上任何向內開啟的門扇寬度。兩個關閉器的速度必須協調,讓輪椅使用者能在第一扇門關閉前通過並打開第二扇。
Waterson 的優勢:因為每顆鉸鏈的關門速度可以獨立調整(SA 和 SA1 分別控制),兩扇門可以設定不同的關門速度。例如第一扇門設慢一點、第二扇門設快一點,確保輪椅使用者有足夠的時間通過前廳。傳統彈簧鉸鏈無法做到這種精確的速度協調。
推側距地面 10"(255 mm)內必須是平滑表面,延伸整個門寬。水平或垂直接縫高差不得超過 1/16"。防止輪椅腳踏、拐杖勾到突出五金。Parallel arm 關閉器可能有組件在此區域;closer hinge 安裝在鉸鏈位置,完全不突出。
廁所隔間門須為自動關閉(self-closing),須符合 Section 404 全部規定。傳統 spring hinge 太猛;頂裝關閉器外觀差且維護困難。Closer hinge 提供安靜、可控的關閉——外觀也適合高檔衛浴設計。

最關鍵的新增:ICC A117.1 Section 404.2.7.2 的 spring hinge 速度要求。傳統彈簧鉸鏈因為沒有阻尼機制而無法達到 1.5 秒。這條規定實際上要求在採用 A117.1 的管轄區域內,任何使用彈簧鉸鏈的門都必須配備門關閉器或 closer hinge。
雖然 ADA 豁免了防火門的 5 磅限制(改用消防法規的 15-30 lbf 上限),但實務上仍然存在一個力道平衡的挑戰:
使用者必須視現場的實際狀況來決定最適合的機構。每種五金都有其適用場景:
k51m:UL Listed 3 小時防火,符合 NFPA 80。開門力與關門力可獨立調整,在多數一般防火門場景下能達到較好的力道平衡。鉸鏈式安裝消除頭頂淨高問題,在 80" 門框上直接安裝不需升級 84" 門框重點:沒有單一五金能在所有防火門場景中都是最佳解。關鍵是根據現場的門鎖阻力、氣壓差、使用頻率和無障礙需求,選擇能夠達到「確實上鎖的最小力道」的機構。
ADA Section 604.8.2 要求廁所隔間門自動關閉。Closer hinge 提供安靜可控的關閉,在 ADA 參數內。
很多商業建築的入口會設計成「前廳」:進門後先到一個小空間,再開第二扇門才進入室內。ADA Section 404.2.6 要求這兩扇門之間至少要有 48 英吋的距離(加上門扇向內開啟時佔用的寬度),讓輪椅使用者有足夠的空間停留,等第一扇門關上後再開第二扇門。這代表兩扇門的關門速度必須協調——如果第一扇門關太慢,輪椅使用者還卡在中間;關太快又會打到人。Waterson 鉸鏈因為每扇門的關門速度可獨立調整,能針對前廳的實際空間設定最適合的速度搭配。
有些門不是裝在牆面上,而是「退縮」到牆壁裡面(例如走廊上的辦公室門,門框比牆面內縮了一段距離)。當這個內縮深度超過 8 英吋時,ADA Section 404.2.4.3 要求門前方必須有額外的迴旋空間,讓輪椅使用者可以在凹入的空間裡轉身並操作門把。
這種場景下,頂裝關閉器的搖臂會佔用凹入空間裡的上方淨空,進一步壓縮了本來就有限的迴旋區域。Waterson closer hinge 安裝在門框側邊的鉸鏈位置,門頂沒有任何突出的搖臂或機構,不會侵入凹入空間的迴旋範圍。

病房、診間和走廊面臨最密集的 ADA 要求。Waterson 的 Hold-open 功能(機械式)可以讓門在高流量時段保持開啟,使用者輕推即可解除定位讓門自動關閉。
注意:Waterson 的 Hold-open 是純機械式,需要人手動輕推門來解除。如果需要在火災警報時自動釋放並關門,必須搭配電磁閥式 hold-open 裝置(electromagnetic holder),由消防系統的信號觸發斷電釋放。Waterson 的機械式 Hold-open 不具備遠端自動釋放功能。
